About Brandy
Brandy was born Brandy Rayana Norwood on February 11, 1979 to Willie Ray Norwood (was a paster and choir director) and Sonja Bates. Although Brandy was born in McComb, Mississippi, she was raised in Carson, California. Brandy was introduced to music at an early age, singing at the church at the age of 2. She became a backup singer for Norment and Immature at the age of 11. Brandy is a huge fan of Whitney Houston. At 14, she was able to land a record deal with Atlantic Records and released her self-titled debut album in 1994 which became Quadruple Platinum.
Brandy’s self-titled debut album, which had two gold certified singles and a platinum single entitled “Baby” reached gold status in less than two months after its release in 1994 and became Quadruple Platinum soon after. In the fall of 1995 she received the “Best New R&B Artist” award and the “Best R&B Female” award in the Billboard Music Awards. She also won the “Best Song From a Movie” award at the 1996 MTV Movie Awards, beating music veterans U2, Whitney Houston, and Seal.
